With Schumacher's Formula 1 comeback tying-in with that of Mercedes as a factory outfit, the German will be back in Grand Prix racing as the team returns for the first time in 55 years.

"We obviously saw some of it in the summer time and I was surprised to see the reaction," said Schumacher, who drove for Mercedes in sports cars before making his F1 debut in 1991.

"It's a great emotion and it's a great feeling that I'm getting from the outside, such a big compliment to all the fans who see it like this - it gives me a greater feel and a greater push.

"We have a World Champion team in every sense of the word and I cannot wait to get into the car for the first time in Valencia. I am convinced that Mercedes will be in a very good position to fight for the championships this season and I will definitely give it a go.

"Driving for Mercedes-Benz again is like the closing of a circle for me as I started my racing driver career with the three-pointed star on my helmet. This is another reason why I cannot wait for the competition to get underway."
